This week, the SAIC (Safe And Inclusive Cities) Project held another impactful session with teenage mothers, fostering reflection, growth, and proactive health decisions. The young mothers engaged in deep discussions on balancing personal identity with motherhood, while also being encouraged to prioritize their children\u2019s health through malaria vaccinations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The session began with reflections on the previous week\u2019s topic family planning. Many of the young mothers shared how access to contraception and reproductive health education has helped them make informed choices about their futures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A key highlight was the discussion on “Rediscovering Yourself as a Young Mother.” Motherhood at a young age often comes with societal pressures and personal struggles, leaving many teenage mothers feeling like they\u2019ve lost their sense of self. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Before I had my baby, I was focused on school and my dreams. Now, I sometimes feel like just a mother and nothing else,” shared one participant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The facilitator encouraged the group to explore ways to pursue their passions, continue education, and maintain social connections while embracing their roles as caregivers. Strategies discussed included: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Time management \u2013 Setting aside moments for self-care and personal growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Community support \u2013 Leaning on peer groups, mentors, and family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Goal-setting \u2013 Creating short-term and long-term plans for education and career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond personal development, the session emphasized child health and well-being. With malaria remaining a leading cause of illness among children in many communities, the SAIC Project urged mothers to take their children for malaria vaccinations at nearby health facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Your child\u2019s health is your priority. Vaccination is a simple step that can save lives,” emphasized one of the health workers present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The discussion also touched on myths and fears around vaccinations, with facilitators providing factual information to dispel misconceptions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The SAIC Project doesn\u2019t just stop at motherhood support it also advocates for comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) education. Many teenage pregnancies result from lack of access to SRH information and services. The project aims to (not the overall objective): <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Educate adolescents on safe sex, contraception, and bodily autonomy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Reduce stigma around teenage pregnancy by fostering supportive communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
